Explainer Video - Medusa

This explainer video retells the myth of Medusa through a contemporary lens, exploring how her story reflects themes of patriarchal oppression and the silencing of women in classical mythology. Visually, the video is designed as an animated theater or a stylized puppet show, with hand-drawn characters that move like cut-out figures across the frame, creating a theatrical and storybook-like stage for the narrative.

The drawings are stylized to echo the visual language of ancient Greek pottery and illustrations. The video uses a limited color palette of black and green with white highlights, and simplified graphic figures creating the mythical atmosphere of Medusa’s world with graphic and bold visuals. The video reframes Medusa not as a monster, but as a symbol of strength, transformation, and defiance against oppressive systems.

CONTENT WARNING: This video includes references to sexual assault and harassment.

DESIGN PROCESS

The objective of this project was to create an explainer video, a format designed to communicate an idea clearly and engagingly by combining visuals, motion, and sound to guide the viewer through a concept. I chose to focus on Medusa, reframing her not as a figure of fear, but as a symbol of strength and resilience. The video was built frame by frame, with carefully considered typography that moves in sync with the audio, reinforcing key moments and pacing the narrative. Each typographic element was intentionally placed to interact with my hand-drawn illustrations, creating a balance between text and image. Rather than simply telling the story, the video allows the viewer to experience Medusa’s transformation in a more layered and visually driven way.
